What exactly is the temperature outside?

The thermometer at the front of the house says it's 4 degrees centigrade, the one on the garden wall at the back of the house says it's 1 degree and the one fixed to the bird feeding table is measuring 2 degrees.

Can I actually use the degree sign (x°) or must I keep spelling it out in full?
